What are life skills?
“A skill that is necessary or desirable for full participation in everyday life.” this is the first result that appeared on the web. Yes, I did the googling for you?
Is that all? There is definitely more than just “a desirable skill”. To me, a life skill is a factor which anyone- irrespective of their age, gender, cast, can pursue and master with some guidance. It is like a flashlight- makes it easier to find our way through the maze of life and can be the shining light in dark times. Well, sometimes, even google misses out on a few things!
A few examples of life skills include: Communicative skills, Ability to control our emotions and critical thinking (you would be reading this forever if I mentioned all of them!).
Now let us shine some light into the main topic of discussion…
I also believe our schools are important because it is in those walls, our life skills burgeon. In the present corona has taken that precious environment away from us. We have pushed the boundaries laid by COVID-19 and have adapted to “digital schooling”. Our entire community is moving on to become digital. Is it possible to incorporate the development of life skills and implement them in the “new normal”?
To develop these skills. No special training is needed, only a perfect environment- where we get tested, get into arguments, be independent, engage in group collaborations and projects! Obviously, the perfect milieu is our educational platforms.
Introducing the NEP has brightened the possibility of incorporating quality education virtually. Why can’t we push the boundaries constructed by COVID 19 further- incorporate collaborative group work (improves communicative, collaborative and critical thinking skills) aided by applications like “Whiteboard” and “OneNote”? Why not engage in social organizations online?
Well, it is up to us. We definitely can have incorporate life skills like before or even better than before! The evolving “digital world” does not need to be something to be concerned about…
