Student Council
What is the Student Council?

What is the process of the being elected into the Student Council?
How does the Student Council work?

What is the Student Council?

The student council is a body that is elected by all members of the school, that seeks to understand the entire community and ensure that all stakeholders of the community are heard and supported for. When we mean community, we mean everyone – students, teachers, parents and staff. The council is made up of about 12 students and is represented by students the between the grades 4 to 12. The members of the council take up different roles and execute these roles for the term set during that academic year. The roles they take up depends on the need of the hour. In the past, Transition and Time management lead, Assembly department lead, Waste Management and Production Control lead are but a few of the roles designed.

Who can contest in the elections? And who can become the School Leader?

Any student from Grade 4 to Grade 12 can send in their reports – on the basis of potential, the nominations list is put up. Of this group, depending on the votes any student might get elected. We have seen the student council be led by grade 4 students as well as from the higher classes. So yes, everyone is welcome to contest and lead!

What is the process of the being elected into the Student Council?

Step 1: All interested students are to work on identifying a problem that matter to them at school, show a detailed analysis of about the problem that clarifies their understanding of the problem, initiate a plan of action to fix it which will invariably need the support of other stakeholders, and then persist in solving the problem even when faced with challenges.

Step 2: A detailed report of the efforts taken in all of the domains mentioned above is submitted to the previous student council and based on the work done, the final nominations are made.

Step 3: The election date is set, and the time in between is used by the candidates to campaign for their votes. The efforts in campaigning includes campaigning with the students, teachers, non-teaching staff including the akkas and driver annas.

Step 4: Elections take place and votes from all the individuals at the school is counted and the results of the new student council is revealed.

How does the Student Council work?

The newly elected body shadows the working of the previous student council for about a week before they assume charge. This transition phase is allocated so that the new body can understand the structures and working of the council in general. After this, new structures and working patterns can definitely be designed by the new team. In the past, the council had opted for ‘working lunch’ during when the agenda and prioritized concerns are discussed and addressed.
