GROUPING WITH EASE

This must be THE unforgettable moment, like EVER! It was last year. I was conducting a class on DIVISION, the finest distributing friend of all time. We commenced off playing with tokens. I posed a question to the children. “I have 12 tokens and I want to give it away to 4 children. How much will each get?”Everyone started working hard at it and I went from table-table, assessing and admiring what each team was up to.

There was a hustle bustle and I was wanted everywhere. Amidst all the confusion, I was muddled up too! So, I concluded to wrap up the commotion by luring their interest to the board. After obtaining their enquiring eyes and ears I sketched 4 stick figure people who were dying for chocolates. I said that we have to share 12 between 4 people. I gave one for all 4 people and eliminated 4 from the 12 chocolates which were also depicted on the side. When the all the 12 chocolates were over, we together summed up all the groups of numbers for each person and… Ended up with 3! The children were so fascinated and grasped the topic with ease. I was on cloud nine after this class. The children cracked all the division problems like a flash. I knew the objective was met, and the children would never overlook division as a dilemma in life!! Here is a small image of the distribution between the 4 people.
