BMIS at Cuddalore
The literacy project with the ASSEFA Schools in Cuddalore ran across two years. It broadly included consistent training and support in Jolly Phonics for the Kindergarten teachers at Kanavu. Efforts taken were on a monthly basis and it was this point that the students found a few points of synergies between BMIS student leadership track and that of Kanavu’s. It is at this point that the student leadership space within the literacy project bloomed.
- Being in the Kanavu Classrooms, interacting with the students across different grades and doing read alouds in the younger classes helped BMIS students experiencing first hand, the literacy levels and the larger context of low–income rural private schools.
- Closer interactions with students of their own age groups, the teachers and the Kanavu space in general, provided chance for BMIS student to break their biases and notions of differences with other students and realize that everybody was learning from each other.
- The hands-on working of a real project in a different context provided BMIS students the opportunity to understand what was their own unique styles in leadership and to contribute to the leadership journeys of others at the same time.
